Photographed this boy at Marquette Park in Gary, Indiana at the beginning of the summer.  I saw him looking into the water with all of this wonder and it reminded me of myself when I was that age.  I used to go to local ponds and collect aquatic creatures of all sorts  (and then I’d come home and scare my older brothers with them).  If this kid doesn’t bring summer in the Midwest (and a little Opie) to mind, well you’d better hurry and find your own summer nostalgia before it’s all over.

Recently photographed the Cook/Sunkel family last week on the Hood Canal.  As the sun started to set I noticed one of their little girls wrapped in a towel with a very familiar look on her face.  It is about this time in August when you occasionally get that whiff of fall and realize summer is on its way out.  No matter how old I get, that feeling of anticipating a new school year never leaves me, and even though I look forward to my favorite season, I always experience that little twinge of sadness as summer comes to a close.   Amid the background noise of happy shouts, final splashes in the water, and the pop of the fire, I couldn’t help but recognize that blank stare and my own thoughts of “What haven’t I done? What have I done?  Where has it gone?”
